About Southern Illinois University at Carbondale

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, more commonly referred to as SIUC or SIU, is a public university located in Carbondale, also known as `The Capital of Southern Illinois`, which is a city located in Southern Illinois, with a population of more than 45 000 residents, when SIU is in session, and a total population of more than 26 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2008 census.

SIUC was founded in 1869, as a teacher’s college, under the name of Southern Illinois Normal College, remaining so until 1948, when Delyte W. Morris took office as president of the university, transforming the college into the 2nd ranked public comprehensive research university in the US state of Illinois, Morris also being the one who created SIU’s medical, law and dental schools.

Since it first opened its doors to students, Southern Illinois significantly developed, being today recognized by the U.S. News & World Report, as a `National University`, which means that SIU is a university that grants a variety of doctoral degrees and it is strongly dedicated to research. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching ranked SIUC as ‘’ Doctoral Research Extensive`, the university being well-known for its various and numerous degree programs offered, from bachelor’s to doctoral level, including professional degrees in medicine and law.

The athletic teams from SIU are known as the Southern Illinois Salukis, formerly known as the `Maroons`, who compete in most of SIU’s 16 varsity sports, in the Missouri Valley Conference, including in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, softball and several other sports, including in football, in which they compete in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Among the most resonant names on the list of notable SIUC alumni, there are: Jim Belushi - actor/comedian, Jim Bittermann - CNN European correspondent based in Paris, Darell Bowen - Mayor of Wellington, Florida, Joan Higginbotham - American astronaut, Robert K. Weiss - producer of The Blues Brothers and other films, Darryl Jones - bassist of The Rolling Stones, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
